2012 A Year in Review

By Sterrie Weaver - President, Lab Rescue of the LRCP

What a great year 2012 has been!  Lab Rescue volunteers have been busier than ever helping almost 1,000 Labrador Retrievers find the ultimate happy ending with their new forever families.   We couldn’t be happier for them and we couldn’t be more grateful for the ongoing support of our donors and volunteers.

The need for Lab Rescue of the L.R.C.P. continues to grow each year.  Each year we are asked to save more and more lives and each year we’re able to meet the growing need. But we can’t do it alone.  We have taken in 890 Labs already this year and it’s just Thanksgiving.

I’m asking you to help us again and make a donation today.

In addition to the hundreds of dogs we take each year from shelters where they face certain death, we rescued and rehomed two groups of breeder dogs.  Our first group were seniors, each over the age of 9, who had spent their lives delivering litter after litter of puppies.  Today they are all spoiled in their new homes.  We were able to celebrate a reunion between KD and  Mavis, two of these breeder dogs , adopted in April.

Just two months later, Lab Rescue was asked to help another group of breeder dogs.  While these dogs were younger they were fearful of people and new situations. Only one is still waiting for her new family and a Lab Rescue foster family is helping her gain courage and confidence.
Right now we are caring for four special labs and our Hurricane Sandy victims are starting to arrive.  We don’t want to say no to anyone but without your donation we may have to.
Your donation means that we can act when needed.

Each new dog that enters our care costs Lab Rescue of the L.R.C.P. an average of $400 but some are much higher.
In 2012 we added two new programs to the basic care for our Labs based on the recommendations of our partner veterinarians.   Lab Rescue has started to provide the Leptospirosis vaccination when a Lab comes into our care; Leptospirosis is a water born bacteria that has been causing more illness and death in dogs and we want to ensure that our Labs have the best and healthiest start possible.  In 2012 we also started micro chipping all Labs that are available for adoption so that, if they go missing at any time in their lives, we have a simple way to ensure their safety.

Cinderella & Tinkerbell when they arrived.

Cinderella & Tinkerbell - READY for ADOPTION

I want to tell you about Cinderella and Tinker Bell; Cinderella is a lab and she was raised with Tinker Bell.  We rescued both, after their family abandoned them, even though Tinker Bell is not a Lab.  They have always lived together and prefer to sleep on the same bed snuggled together. She is a Lab at heart.

We travelled hours to pick up these girls and get them the care they need.  One month later, their scabbed and hairless bodies are healing and their spirits are strong.  They will find their new home soon.

We’ve been asked to Do More, Go Further and Help More Labs than ever before.

When Hurricane Sandy hit we knew that we would be asked to help and those calls are coming in now.  Cole, available for adoption now, is our first Hurricane Sandy Lab to arrive.  More are coming.  We can’t say no but we can’t say yes without your help.  Please give now!

In 2011 – 900 Labs were saved.  In 2012 – 1000 will be saved.  We are happy to be able to say that we did it! Thanks to you!

P.S. Your generosity is the difference between life and death. It is only with your support that Lab Rescue of the L.R.C.P. can continue to look out for these special dogs that we all love so much.
